- What are the duties of Practical Nurses?
Practical Nurses (PNs) are supervised by registered nurses (RNs), physicians and/or dentists. They must ensure the safety and quality of nursing care they provide their clients; these tasks include doing bedside care, taking of assessments/vital signs, administering medications, feeding, assisting in Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) and documenting.
- What are the career opportunities for PNs?
A lot of opportunities await PNs abroad. In the US alone, the employment of licensed PNs is expected to grow by 14% from 2006 to 2016, in response to the long-term care needs of an increasing elderly population and the general increase in demand for healthcare services.
- How long will it take to become a PN?
With the KGS curriculum, it takes only one (1) year to become a PN. But for fresh high school graduates, additional study hours is a requirement. All KGS students are trained extensively to pass the NCLEX-PN.
- What is the NCLEX-PN?
The NCLEX-PN stands for National Licensure Examination for Practical Nurse). It is an examination given to test the competence of PNs in the entry level. It utilizes the Computer Adaptive Testing (CAT) format,
administered up to a maximum of five (5) hours. The test is delivered in general countries, including the Philippines.
- How is the performance of KGS in the NCLEX-PN?
KGS is proud to say that it has a 97% passing rate for the NCLEX-PN. This is because the school maintains its high standards in PN education, updating students with the latest nursing trends and issues in order to be globally competent.
- Are there similar tests that PNs have to take in other countries?
In Australia, PN graduates must be compliant with the requirements for eligibility with the ANMC (Australian Nurse Midwifery Council) and must pass the Enrolled Nurse Licensure Exams. As for Ontario, Canada, PNs must meet all the eligibility requirements to qualify for the Professional Practical Nursing Licensure Exams. Winnipeg, Manitoba accepts LPNs through compliance of the license endorsement requirements.
- What is the difference between a licensed PN (LPN) and a registered nurse (RN)?
The difference lies in the nursing scope of practice wherein RNs have a higher degree of accountability and responsibility while they supervise the LPNs. Also, RNs, who are graduates of an associate or bachelor’s degree in nursing, have a better and faster career growth. The careers of LPNs also advance, but they have to enroll in a ladderized program (as done in the US).
- How can an LPN become an RN?
An LPN must simply enroll with the ADNE/ASNE bridge program for about a year, after which he/she may challenge the NCLEX-RN. It is also an option if he/she wants to study further for the BSN degree. This may take about another year. The latter is usually needed if an RN wants to be in the academe or pursues a clinical managerial position. Master of Arts in Nursing (M.A.N.) degree units are also a must.
- What about graduates of a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) who did not pass the U.S. licensure or board exams? Can they be eligible for licensure for NCLEX-PN?
Each U.S. state or country has its own set of policies and regulations for PN licensure. In effect, BSN graduates may or may not be eligible for U.S. PN licensure depending on which US state or which country they will apply for eligibility.
